JoAnn "Jan" Hobbie founded The Shot Doctor School of Basketball right here in Wilmington, NC not only as a way to uphold her husband's legacy, but to continue a tradition of impacting the lives of young people in a positive manner. Just as she had done for nearly 30 years as a special needs educator in the state of New Jersey, just as she has done for over a decade right here in Wilmington tutoring the youth of our community, Jan wanted to continue to make a difference.

For decades Mrs. Hobbie traveled the country with her husband teaching the shooting methods that have become so infamous. From Syracuse to UCLA to Purdue they traveled together spreading their wealth of basketball knowledge and making many lifelong friends along the way. Many of which she is still in contact with like NBA and coaching legends Hubbie Brown and Rollie Massimino.

Upon her husband's passing, Mrs. Hobbie knew she had the knowledge and passion to continue their lifelong dedication to changing lives through basketball. She was determined to put together the finest coaches and staff that would have the same dedication to teaching young people how to play the game of basketball the RIGHT way! However, it goes well beyond teaching someone how to shoot a basketball or the other fundamentals of the game, for her it's about using basketball as a means of getting a person to believe in their own ability. Through hard work, dedication, and a strong belief in yourself, any young person can be successful whether it is in the world of basketball or beyond. She is resolute in providing these life lessons to the youth players in Wilmington.

Although her husband is no longer standing by her side, he's smiling down on the amazing devotion his wife has to establishing the finest youth basketball program in the state of North Carolina.

COACH ELDER'S BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in New Jersey, teaching, coaching, and playing the game of basketball were in Coach Elder's "blood" from the day he was born.

His father was a collegiate basketball player at Jersey City State College who went on to coach collegiate basketball at Montclair State University and high school football and basketball at Jefferson Township High School. His distinguished high school coaching career included three state championships and an award honoring him as one of the elite high school coaches in the nation. Both of his parents were public school teachers.

Greg's brother, Chris Elder, played college basketball at Yale University, then went on to Cornell medical school, and completed his orthopedic residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During that time he had the honor of being one of the UNC Tarheel basketball team's staff of physicians. He is currently a renowned orthopedic surgeon in Ashville, NC.

Coach Greg Elder received both academic and athletic scholarships to play basketball at Division II Catawba College in Salisbury, NC. During his playing career he received the team's coaches award in 1995, helped his team win two conference titles, and was Co-Captain of a team that was ranked 11th in the nation his senior year. It was here that he was coached by his basketball mentor, Jim Baker. Coach Baker would play a significant role in Coach Elder's playing and coaching career.

Upon graduating from Catawba Greg began his coaching and teaching careers at East Rowan High School. In his first year as the JV boys basketball coach, his team won more games than any other basketball team at the school in the previous seven years. The following year he moved up to be the Associate Head Varsity boys coach in charge of the defense. He helped turn a Varsity team that went 1-19 the year before into a 9-win team that made the state playoffs with 4 sophomore starters.

After several years at East Rowan, Greg's dreams of becoming a full-time college basketball coach became a reality. He was offered the Top Assistant men's basketball coaching position at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA under the tutelage of head coach Bill Dooley. Coach Dooley was the former Head Coach at the University of Richmond, Irish National Team Coach, Assistant at Virginia Tech, NBA Scout, and he too was a tremendous mentor to Coach Elder.

Greg eventually returned "home" and became an Assistant coach at his alma mater, Catawba College under Coach Baker, and returned to the classroom as a teacher. Greg was a highly regarded educator as well as an integral member of the Catawba men's basketball coaching staff that won several conference championships along with a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16.

In July of 2015, Greg, his ex-wife Kristie (also a former Catawba College basketball player), and daughter Mia, relocated to the Wilmington area. Ironically, Greg first met Coach Ernie Hobbie (The Orginal "Shot Doctor") at the age of 15 as a player at a basketball camp in New Jersey. While home in NJ during his sophomore year at Catawba, he worked with Coach Hobbie as an instructor at the very same camp and got to know Coach Hobbie on a personal level. He had tremendous respect and admiration for him, so when he met his wife JoAnn Hobbie here in Wilmington in early 2016, and she explained she was continuing her husband's legacy through the Shot Doctor School of Basketball, it was an easy decision for Coach Elder to become part of the staff.

Coach Elder went on to build the Shot Doctor program from 2016-2021. Over that span, the Shot Doctor program trained 100's of local athletes who are now excelling at the Collegiate and High School levels both on and off the court.

Due to the pandemic and the limitations it placed on the program, Coach Elder took a job teaching Math and coaching Boy's Basketball at Noble Middle School in August of 2021. Over the next two years, Coach Elder led Noble to a combined 27-1 record and Back to Back Conference Championships. In August of 2023 he resigned from Noble to return to his passion of running the Shot Doctor program.
